Our recipe for today is considered to be the national dish of Norway. Farikal is a traditional Norwegian dish, where the ingredients primarily consisting of cabbage, mutton and whole black peppercorns, are slow cooked together in a casserole.

Farikal is a typical preparation for the autumns, and served with jacket potatoes. Originally the dish is said to be from the western part of Norway, but owing to its popularity it is considered to be the national dish of Norway.  The last Thursday of September is observed as Farikal Feast day in whole of Norway. Farikal – Recipe

Ingredients Required

  • 250 grams of sliced lamb
  • 1 cabbage head with core removed and thinly sliced
  • 500ml of water
  • 2 tablespoons of whole black peppercorn
  • Salt as per taste

Procedure of Preparation

  • Take a large pot used for preparing soup.
  • Put a layer of sliced mutton at the bottom of the pot. Top it with a layer of cabbage.
  • Repeat this process of layering with all the ingredients.
  • Enclose the whole peppercorns in a cheesecloth and add them to the pot.
  • Pour sufficient water and cover the pot.
  • Bring the ingredients to a boil and cook over a low flame for about 2 hours.
  • Serve hot.
