Nutmeg is the seed of the fruit borne by the tree M. malabarica or Myristica fragrans. It has a reddish covering which is another spice called Mace. 

Nutmeg and Mace have similar flavor profiles except that Nutmeg is sweeter while Mace has a more delicate flavor. Hence Nutmeg is also used in cooking sweet dishes such as pies and cakes.
